A SPECIALIST eye surgeon is helping to eliminate the need for Bendigo residents to travel to Melbourne for treatment.
Former Melbourne eye specialist and surgeon, Mr Farokh Irani, has made the tree-change, uprooting his life to enjoy the Bendigo lifestyle and sense of community.
"It's a good place for my wife and I to raise our two young kids. Bendigo has great schools and it's a great city," Dr Irani said.
The US-born, Australian trained Dr Irani has been practising for 18 years and has worked part-time in Bendigo for the past decade.
"There is a growing need in Bendigo for eye services. Most people we see are elderly or middle-aged," he said.
Dr Irani's clinic, operating under the name, Eye Surgeons Bendigo, specialises in cataract surgery. This can be done as a day procedure under a local anesthetic with no needles or sutures. A variety of the most advanced lens implants are then put into the eye. The clinic also treats glaucoma, retinal disease and macula degeneration.
It is a new, modern practice with all the latest lasers and diagnostic equipment.
Dr Irani worked in the USA, UK and Israel, alongside the world's most prestigious eye surgeons, prior to his return to Australia.
ESB provides Bendigo and surrounds a local alternative to the medical services available in Melbourne.
"People do not have to visit capital cities to get excellent treatment," he said.
